Free courses offered in Lower Mainland to those living with chronic pain

Back in Motion is hosting a six-session chronic pain self-management course at four of its locations in the Lower Mainland. The course is designed to help people who live with chronic pain to manage their symptoms & improve the quality of their life. B in M is doing this in partnership with the University of Victoria & BC Health.

 

Back in Motion Rehab Inc. is a full-service rehabilitation & employment solutions firm based in BC.

 

These courses come out of research conducted by Stanford University and represent the most up-to-date research on the management of chronic disorders, including chronic pain.

 

The course is designed for:

  • people living with pain of all origins, including chronic disease, trauma & pain disorders as well as for
  • people living with or caring for a person with pain including spouses, family members and friends.

 

The six 2.5 hour small group sessions consist of:

  • small lectures,
  • group & paired discussion,
  • group & individual activities,
  • gentle exercise, small lectures,
  • group & paired discussion,
  • group & individual activities,
  • gentle exercise,
  • problem-solving,
  • pain management tools such as breathing techniques &
  • individual planning.

 

Parts of the sessions are kept short to assist individuals with low tolerance.  

 

Sessions are currently running from 5:00 to 7:30 pm.  Afternoon sessions may take place in the future if there is a high demand.

 

Each course is run by two leaders who have completed the University of Victoria training course.  All the volunteer instructors are people living or working with pain conditions themselves. Many of them decided to become instructors after experiencing the benefits of taking the course.

 

The courses are currently offered in these languages:

  • English, Punjabi, Hindi, Cantonese & Mandarin. In addition,
  • reading material & support is available in many other languages including Korean and Farsi, to assist with individuals who speak English as a second language.
